The SPO is a friendly, enthusiastic and ambitious amateur orchestra, based in Sheffield but drawing loyal players of all ages and backgrounds from an area encompassing S Yorks, W Yorks, Humberside and Derbyshire. We rehearse weekly, on Tuesday evenings, and aim to give three symphony concerts a year with plenty of other ‘one off’ activities. We have just completed our second full season with musical director, Ewa Strusinska, which has seen a substantial increase in our audience who have been generous in their support and critical acclaim.
The 2005/2006 season was the Orchestra’s Diamond Jubilee Year. A completion of over sixty years of music making in the Sheffield area. The Orchestra performs mainly symphonies and concertos and provides a medium where musicians of all ages can explore their musical talents to the full. With the current decline in opportunities for music making, orchestras such as this form one of the most important training grounds for musicians of the future. The orchestra is a registered charity and makes every effort to raise sufficient money from subscriptions and ticket sales to fund the cost of a season of concerts. For details of this or past concert seasons or for a history of the orchestra, please click on the link to our official website (on the left).
The Orchestra is always on the lookout for new members, particularly string players. If you are interested in joining, please e-mail or contact a committee member (such as me: davidoakley@btopenworld.com).
